An Indian man from Illinois received 10 years in state prison on Dec. 19 for raping a 15-year-old Massachusetts girl.
The 32-year-old Mani Batchu, a former psychiatry resident at the University of Illinois Medical Center, received his sentence in Hampshire Superior Court. He pleaded guilty to charges including child rape.
According to prosecutors, Batchu met the teen, who is from Amherst, online in 2009 and during their interactions he lied and tried to convince her to have sex. He eventually traveled to Massachusetts to have sex with the teen when she was 15.
Batchu’s lawyers claimed that the girl said she was 18. There were also reports that Batchu blamed his relationship with the girl on cultural differences, including the fact that female relatives in India married as young teens.
Batchu had already been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison in November on charges connected to the relationship with the Amherst teen. He will serve the sentences concurrently. |
