INDIA New England's 2013 Person of the Year Guraraj "Desh" Deshpande is well known for his many tech successes as a founder and executive, but the reason the newspaper has highlighted him for the past year is his continual influence in innovation and entrepreneurism. However, unlike the serial entrepreneurs who repeatedly start and sell one cutting-edge company after another, Deshpande's efforts now are focused on helping others succeed in the startup world.

5/13/2013 On May 8, about 60 people attended a documentary screening and panel discussion at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Department of Urban Studies and Planning in Cambridge, Mass. Wright State University's Sirisha Naidu and William Patterson University's Balmurli Natrajan, both members of the Mining Zone People's Solidarity Group, were the guest speakers. The discussion was moderated by MIT Professor Balakrishnan Rajagopal.

| 5/7/2013  History was made in late April as Representative Judy Chu (D-CA) and Representative David Valadao (R-CA) announced the launch of the first-ever American Sikh Congressional Caucus. Representatives Chu and Valadao are the co-chairs of the caucus. As of yesterday's launch, 30 bipartisan members of the U.S. House of Representatives have already joined the caucus.

 Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Aloke Chakravarty, of the U.S. Attorneys’ Office Anti-Terrorism and National Security Unit, will prosecute the case against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who has been charged by the U.S. Justice Department with killing people with a weapon of mass destruction, and faces life in prison or the death penalty. Chakravarty will be joined in the prosecution by Assistant U.S. Attorney William Weinreb.

 As a teen growing up outside of Philadelphia, Kevin Negandhi was a big sports fan and had only one dream for his career — to be on ESPN's SportsCenter, arguably the most famous sports news show in the world. While his Indian American peers went their standard way in engineering, technology and medicine, Negandhi chased his dream and made it happen. He now works at the ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn., as a SportsCenter anchor for the 9 a.m. to noon edition of the widely watched sports news program, with ESPN veteran Hannah Storm.

 The bombing at the 2013 Boston Marathon has rocked the city, the country and the world with its images of violence on a day synonymous with the unity of cheering on runners and the celebration of athletic achievement at the oldest and most renowned road race. While authorities search for a suspect and motive, most New Englanders feel only sadness for the three dead and over 170 wounded by the tragic events. Members of the region's Indian American community have expressed grief and remorse for the terrible events of April 15.

 On April 15, well-known journalist Fareed Zakaria will serve as the keynote speaker at the Akshaya Patra Foundation's 6th Annual Boston Benefit Event at the Westin in Waltham, Mass. The Akshaya Patra Foundation is one of the largest nonprofit school meal programs in the world and serves over 1.3 million children daily in over 9,000 schools through 19 kitchens in nine states in India.

 New footage from a surveillance camera has revealed critical clues which have fortified the search for Sunil Tripathy, a 22-year old Brown University student who has been missing since March 16. The footage appears to capture Tripathy on a street near his Providence, R.I., apartment just after his reported disappearance, according to authorities working on the case, which includes the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Providence Police.

 Shweta Narayan, environmental justice activist, and coordinator of the Community Environmental Monitoring program for The Other Media in Tamil Nadu, India, spoke at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on March 11. Her talk, titled “Mercury in the Mist,” was attended by around 30 people from Cambridge and surrounding communities. It focused on the mercury contamination caused by the now-disbanded thermometer factory of Anglo-Dutch multinational company Unilever in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, and the plight of several of the workers from mercury exposure.

 WRise, a women-led group aiming to address universal issues that affect women and promote open dialogue about these issues, held its first event on March 3 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. The public discussion, titled “Women: The Right to Be: Violence against Women and the Case of Soni Sori,” opened a dialogue on issues of custodial rape, state-supported violence against women in geo-politically sensitive areas, and problems of accessing justice through the case of Sori, a tribal woman from Chattisgarh, India.

 Sherry Rehman, Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, joined Meghan O'Sullivan, a Harvard University international affairs professor, for a public address at the recent JFK Forum, with opening remarks from Iris Bohnet, Harvard professor of public policy and academic dean at the Harvard Kennedy School. Following the address at the JFK Forum, the South Asian Institute at Harvard hosted a lunch with Ambassador Rehman and faculty from across the school.

 Neel Desai, 18, of South Burlington High School in South Burlington, Vt., was honored at a top youth volunteer in Vermont by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Sejal Vallabh, 17, of Newton, Mass., a senior at Newton North High School, was honored as distinguished finalist for Massachusetts. The awards are a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism.
