Mangadhara R. Madineedi, M.D., a physician with the VA Boston Healthcare System, has been honored by his peers of the Norfolk District Medical Society as the district’s 2013 Community Clinician of the Year. Originally established in 1998, the Community Clinician of the Year Award recognizes a physician from each of the society’s 20 medical districts who has made a significant contribution to his or her community.

Third Life Studio in Somerville, Mass., will host a unique evening of music performances on May 18 at 8 p.m. with Boston vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Kelli Eagan, Hindustani classical singer from West Bengal Soma Sarkar and Mumbai tabla artist Amol Khanapurkar. Eagan will share her original music compositions played on acoustic guitar along with some classic Hindi songs. Sarkar will perform in the North Indian Classical style of singing. Khanapurkar will accompany both performances.

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund and the National Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islander Research in Education have started a national public awareness effort dedicated to increasing access and completion among Asian American and Pacific Islander students, the fastest-growing, but often the most overlooked and underserved student population at U.S. colleges and universities.

The American India Foundation's New England Chapter, in partnership with the Boston University India Initiatives, will host "An Evening with Gurcharan Das" on May 30 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the BU School of Law in Boston. The event will feature remarks from internationally renowned author and public intellectual figure Gurcharan Das.

The Boston chapter of the Indus Entrepreneurs registered another strong success with its annual TiECON East, which attracts over 500 entrepreneurs and investors every year and this year, in its 15th year, was no different. The event also featured a change of scene to the hotbed of innovation in Kendall Square in Cambridge, Mass., which is also now home of TiE Boston.

The Connecticut chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin honored three Indian Americans, two outstanding achievers and one person for community service, at its annual awards banquet held at the Italian Center in Stamford, Conn., in late April. The three Indian Americans are Yale University professor Dr. Ramamurti Shankar, industrialist Rakesh Narang and community organizer Suresh Sharma.

The first-ever Indian and South Asian Health Expo, organized by the Indian Medical Association of New England and INDIA New England news, as well as 15 community and professional organizations, drew rave reviews from the approximately 700 attendees. Many well-known doctors in attendance also had high praise for the event, which was held all day on April 27 at the Marriott Hotel in Newton, Mass.

A screening of the documentary, "Bitter Seeds," was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last month, with about 70 people in attendance. The documentary is set in the central-Indian region of Vidarbha, a cotton-growing area, which has witnessed an alarming, but distressingly steady, spate of suicides by its farmers. It is estimated that there were upwards of 200,000 suicides between 1990 and 2000. More recently, there were reports of seven farmer deaths so far in 2013.

While the first-ever Indian and South Asian Health Expo was a great success this past weekend, with approximately 700 attending over the day-long event at the Marriott Hotel in Newton, Mass., on April 27, particularly popular was the speaker series, which had a packed hall filled with attentive listeners being addressed on a number of health-related topics.

They all have female CEOs and the Boston chapter of the Indus Entrepreneurs will examine the role of women in business at its annual convention TiECON East 2013, which will be held at the Cambridge Marriott in Kendall Square from May 2-3. The theme of this year’s conference is “Empowering Entrepreneurs.”
