Nominations are now open for INDIA New England's 2013 Woman of the Year.

INDIA New England will honor the top 20 finalists and the 2013 Woman of the Year winner at the 2013 Woman of the Year Banquet & Awards Ceremony on June 7 at the Marriott Hotel in Newton, Mass. The winners will be chosen based on their contributions to their community, culture, organizations, business and their personal achievements in diverse fields including art, academics, health care, politics, business and charity work. This year marks the 11th edition of the Woman of the Year award.

A special issue profiling all of the finalists will be published in the May 2013 issue of INDIA New England. To view previous winners, please visit www.indianewengland.com/woman and click on Winner Bios.

2012 INDIA New England Woman of the Year Ranjani Saigal says she has been overwhelmed by the response she has received since winning the award in late June, with friends, former students and acquaintances from the past coming forward to congratulate her. But for a passionate teacher and educator, she says she has really enjoyed reconnecting and is happy to know that so many people still remember her and felt compelled enough to reach out.

2011 INDIA New England Woman of the Year Dr. Manju Sheth has agreed to become one of the lead sponsors of the annual INDIA New England Woman of the Year, including the banquet and awards ceremony. Subu Kota, head of the Boston Group, sponsor of the Woman of the Year event for the last three years has also agreed to renew his commitment for the next three years.

Sharma is a biomaterials technologist who focuses on innovative solutions at the interface of biology and materials. Currently, she heads up the materials science and engineering department at Arsenal Medical, a Watertown, Mass.-based medical device company focused on the treatment of cardiovascular disease, the management of pain and the stasis of wounds.

There is not much difference between my life and world and that of the many other women that read this magazine. So, I feel somewhat bashful and reticent to put the spotlight on myself.

Born and raised in a family of engineers, I discovered my scientist genes at a young age. A career in the specialty of biomedical engineering originated from my passion for working with people. However, my professional pursuits transformed after a life-altering car accident. I realized that no technology could ever replace the effect of a physician’s empathy on his/her patients, and I decided to become an engineer of the living — a physician.

I have been the principal of Shishu Bharati in Lexington for nearly 30 years — almost half my life! Shishu Bharati has become a part of me — often I say, it is my temple. My goal and the goal of the executive committee, teachers and hundreds of volunteers that I have been privileged to work with are the same: we seek to open doors in young minds — from kindergarten through grade 8.

I also own an event management company called Dhoom Entertainment (formerly Avanter). I am very involved in Gurjar, a 35 year old Gujarati association of New England.
